"Creativity is a central source of meaning in our lives... [and] when we are involved in it, we feel that we are living more fully than during the rest of life." Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi I am an extremely lucky girl when I think about the choices I have made and the lifestyle I choose to pursue and the partner I choose to love and have in my life.
Money and choices are often difficult to mesh and life has a way of keeping you in check in terms of those choices. Yes, ideally, with unlimited funds, you don't have to think to much about the choices that you make which affect the environment that you live in. Unfortunately, most of us don't have unlimited funds and so budgets have to exercised with a small amount of caution.
Yesterday, Duke and I went out and purchased a Yamaha P60 Digital Piano. Its lovely and sounds wonderful. Why would we do this? I mean realistically, the thousand some dollars could have went to more practical areas of our life. But the thing is ...
We value creativity and expression. Aiden is plowing ahead with his love of learning the piano and there is nothing more beautiful to me than listening to him practice and seeing the spark of passion on his face when it comes to music. Duke will be able to use it to create his passionate sounds on the computer and renew his joy of playing piano. I will finally be able to make peace with my young self and fullfill my wish to learn to play and yes once we are back from holidays, I am going to start taking lessons. I am super excited!
Ultimately, we want an actual piano but that has to wait until we buy our house, realistically. Sure, if we didn't buy the electronic piano, we would be one step closer to buying our house but it doesn't matter because I love where we are currently living and I love that our house is full of paints, canvas, computers, cameras, music, books and all the instruments of our creations. I love that walking into my home inspires me to create and express my vision of the world around me. I love that look of passion and love that crosses the faces of those I love when they are engaged in doing what they love.
I enjoy the fact the money I spend has a purpose towards the creative and the enjoyment of myself and my family. We only live once and if I have to work in a non-creative environment to live than dammit, I am going to live in that way that makes me happy. < em>"Be daring, be different, be impractical, be anything that will assert integrity of purpose and imaginative vision against the play-it-safers, the creatures of the commonplace, the slaves of the ordinary."
